Sashi Cheliah beats Ben Borsht to win MasterChef Australia with highest score in show’s history

MasterChef promised it’s most thrilling episode of all time and it certainly delivered with Sashi Cheliah scoring 93 out 100 points, the highest grand finale total ever for a winner in the show’s history.

Tasked with recreating Heston Blumenthal’s gravity-defying ‘Counting Sheep’ dessert in grand finalists Sashi and his competitor Ben Borsht were up against it.

With Ben trailing by 16 points in the final round there was little chance he’d catch up, and indeed, Sashi reigned supreme, recreating the floating meringues dish to near perfection and taking home the ultimate title of MasterChef 2018.

Ben, 31, was facing an uphill climb from the start when he went into the final round 16 points behind Sashi – the largest point gap between contestants seen in MasterChef’s finale history. 

His early dishes, a crab with avocado cream starter and battered fish and pea main, attracted scores as low as 6 out of ten from the judges. 

Meanwhile Sashi’s fish curry took a whopping ten out of ten, placing him so far ahead of Ben at a lead of 57 to Ben’s 41.

Both men completed Heston’s dish, with included 84 ingredients and a meringue floating midair on a magnetized pillow.  

However Ben’s amazing attempt at the desert, which the judges felt was a near-perfect copy, was not enough for him to catch up.  

Heston said of Ben’s effort: ‘There was some fantastic bursts of the mixture of the flavours that really connected.’

However the judges believed that Sashi: ‘really nailed’ the complex dessert.

It came contestant Khanh Ong has fell at the final hurdle during Monday night’s semifinal, missing out on a spot in the finale. 

His exit came after a dramatic moment in which the Victorian native broke down in tears after burning his entire dish of pan-seared fish during a pressure test.
