Saturday Kitchen viewers in hysterics as chef Poppy O’Toole uses X-rated word

Viewers of Saturday Kitchen were left in hysterics this weekend when a guest asked what a ‘quim’ was live on television.

Poppy O’Toole, 28, appeared on the BBC One show to cook for singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon.

The chef explained how she started a TikTok page to share potato-related content after she was made redundant from a job.

Poppy told how she soon went on to amass 4million followers on the app, which she was surprised at because she started her account ‘on a quim’.

Realising she made a mistake, host Matt Tebbutt, 49, corrected her, insisting she’d started her TikTok page ‘on a whim’.

A bemused Poppy went on to quiz Matt on what a ‘quim’ was, with the presenter awkwardly skirting over the matter.

The word ‘quim’ is defined by the Collins dictionary as being a British vulgar, slang noun for female genitals.

Amused viewers were quick to take to Twitter after watching the scenes unfold on screen.

One person wrote: ‘I want to be emotionally compensated for having my mum ask me what “quim” means. #SaturdayKitchen.’

Someone else shared: ‘#saturdaykitchen did she really just ask what a “quim” was?’

While another person posted: ‘Poppy O’Toole is my new hero #SaturdayKitchen #quim.’

Someone else wrote: ‘I’m here writing lecture notes about Tragi-Comedy but I can’t stop laughing about the quim slip of the tongue. #SaturdayKitchen #Quimgate.’

While another person posted: ‘Wonderful wonderful scenes as the world quim gets said twice instead of whim on #SaturdayKitchen. Highlight of the year so far.’

‘Anyone care to tell her? I’ve never heard the word quim said so many times on a Saturday morning #saturdaykitchen,’ wrote another viewer.

While someone else shared: ‘The puzzled look on Poppy’s face says she has no idea what she said.’

Someone else tweeted: ‘When I woke up today I’d never have imagined that “Quim” would be trending in the UK.’

Poppy lost her job at the start of lockdown and she previously revealed how ‘playing around on TikTok’ reignited her love of cooking and lead to a career as an influencer with millions of followers and even a book deal.

Michelin-trained Poppy, from London, started working in kitchens when she was just 18. When the country was plunged into lockdown in 2020, she was made redundant from her 70-hour a week job in a top kitchen.

With no way to pay rent, she moved back into her family home for what she thought would be a two-week lockdown where her younger siblings introduced her to TikTok.

She now is a huge TikTok star, with a dozens of big names and brands backing her.

The cook has deals with huge companies including American Express – and has expanded beyond just making videos of potatoes, including teaching basic chef techniques to millions, including the perfect way to cut an onion and how to poach an egg, which have both racked up millions of views.

‘Like many chefs last year, my career came to a standstill when lockdown hit and restaurants were closed across the country,’ she told MailOnline.

‘I was made redundant, before furlough was a word and my employers didn’t even stick around to try and keep me on.

‘I was left genuinely considering how I was going to pay the rent.

‘I moved back home for what I thought would be about a two week lockdown, felt sorry for myself for about two days and then spend hours scrolling on TikTok and thought… I could do that!

‘Growth was slow to begin with but even one or two comments a day were rewarding.

‘It wasn’t until I started my potato series in November when I went from 100,000 followers to over a million overnight!’
