Savage Garden: Darren Hayes told he ‘looked gay’ in music video

Savage Garden’s Darren Hayes reveals his American record label told him ‘he looked gay’ in a music video and refused to promote his album

Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has revealed his American record company once told him he ‘looked gay’ in one of his music videos.

The singer, 49, told the Herald Sun on Wednesday his U.S. label dropped all support for his debut solo album, Spin, after they saw the video for its first single, Insatiable.

‘It came from the top in New York and the message was, “He looks gay when he moves, so we have to reshoot that video, and don’t let him dance… we don’t know what to do with this,”‘ Hayes said.

‘It was heartbreaking. I was sent off to the UK, where the album was huge, and that gave me a career in Europe. But my career in Australia was effectively stopped, too,’ he added.

Spin was released in 2002 and sold two million copies worldwide.

While Spin was a hit in Britain, where it debuted at number two, the album was shelved in the U.S.

‘I have bittersweet memories of that album,’ Hayes said.

It comes after Hayes spoke about the struggles he faced at the height of his career.

The musician told News Corp he felt ‘deeply saddened’ about not being able to express his true self.

‘I had a huge sense of grief about my relationship to my sexuality, and grief about my career at the peak of my Savage Garden fame,’ Hayes said.

‘The audience never truly knew who I was. And that made me so deeply sad.’
