Savvy couple reveal how they saved more than $60,000 in two years while travelling the world

A savvy couple have revealed how they saved more than $60,000 in two years while jet-setting around the world.

Britt, 30, and Jay, 29, haven’t paid rent in two years after they started house sitting in 2016 – saving enough for a house deposit in the process.

‘We have house sat in London, Dublin, Bangkok, Malaysia, New Zealand, Melbourne, France … we’re currently in Rome, Italy,’ Britt told news.com.au.

The pair travelled the world together after meeting in the Australian Alps in 2014, but still felt something was missing from their lives.

Britt said that her and Jay first got into house sitting while living in London, where they saw how much a friend of theirs loved doing it.

The couple then looked into how they too could save money from housesitting, and landed their first job at a just around the corner from where they were living.

‘From then on we were hooked. We slowly built up our references and began house sitting full-time once our working holiday visas expired in the UK,’ said Britt.

Since their first housesitting gig, the nomadic couple hasn’t looked back.

So far Britt and Jay have house sat 27 different homes, 35 dogs, 17 cats, 10 fish, six chickens and one turtle – across eight countries.

Britt and Jay sometimes use the website Aussie House Sitters, but more often than not their clients come to them from their own website and Instagram account of over 6,000 followers.

Despite saving enough money for a house deposit, Britt and Jay don’t actually get paid to house sit.

But they say they’re just grateful to have a free roof over their heads in some of the world’s most famous cities.

‘Most homeowners love this because they know their home will be looked after and also have peace of mind that their pets will have someone around most of the day with them.’

The couple usually house sits at a single home for between three and five weeks at a time, but since they work for themselves as developers, it allows them to work from anywhere in the world.

Despite global house sitting never being their long term plan, the couple says there is no plans to stop any time soon.

‘We did spend 12 months house sitting around Melbourne. It helped us understand what sort of area we might want to buy in eventually, but that’s not on the cards for the foreseeable future.’

The couple said that house sitting has changed the way they travel and see the world, and have tried to talk their friends and family into the same thing.
