A makeup artist and mother-of-four has revealed how she transformed her son’s ‘atrocious’ neon green bedroom into a seaside-inspired oasis.
Deb Martin and her husband Cameron Ley, from Western Australia, bought a 120 year old cottage in July 2017, and since then they have taken on the mammoth project of renovating it room by room.
It took Deb and Cam only a week and less than $1,000 to turn the ‘disastrous’ room into the retreat their 12-year-old son Billy had envisioned.
‘It was really bad to begin with. This could possibly have been the worst before bedroom in history! Who paints a ceiling fluro green?’ the 41-year-old told FEMAIL.

It took her family only a week and less than $1,000 to turn the ‘disastrous’ room into the retreat 12-year-old Billy envisioned
The room originally had ugly brick walls, green window shades, a concrete floor that was painted green and a fluorescent green ceiling that proved to be quite the eye-sore.
‘The colour was atrocious, it was so bright, it was just such a random addition,’ Deb said.
Her son had requested a beach-themed room but instead of going down the clichéd route of incorporating shells and seahorses Deb styled it in a more grown-up way.
She and Cam started by hiring a plasterer for $250 to hide the unattractive brick, and then waited six weeks for it to set.

‘Although that may seem ages as soon as the walls were ready it took less than a week to paint, carpet and style,’ she said.
‘It doesn’t have to cost the earth when you’re renovating, as it all comes down to styling and upcycling furniture and sentimental items; it’s a great money saver.
‘The lamp next to Billy’s bed is just a concrete candle holder I had outside and Cameron made it into a bedside lamp.’

Deb said her son Billy (pictured) loves his new room
The carpet installation cost the couple $350 and the family all helped each other with painting the walls and ceiling.
They used natural white Dulux paint to hide the fluro green and help completely transform the room.
Deb also wanted to hand down a precious heirloom to her son, which is a glass buoy that was once owned by her grandfather in the 1950s.
She commissioned a friend of hers to make a macramé hanging for only $40 to hold the precious piece.
The ocean artwork featured in the room was found at a discount store for $40.
‘Billy loves his space so much.
He feels relaxed in his room because it’s so calm and peaceful now,’ she said.
The pair have also taken on the challenge of dealing with their master bedroom, as well as their laundry.
