Search for Ohio mom who vanished in the Great Smoky Mountains

A huge search is underway for an Ohio mom who disappeared on a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Mitzie Sue ‘Susan’ Clements, 53, from the Cleves area, was hiking with her daughter on the Forney Ridge Trail, near Andrews Bald, on Tuesday when they got separated.

Her daughter says they’d agreed she would go on ahead and wait for her mother to catch up, but she never came. Once she realized her mom was missing, she reported the incident to the authorities.

Around 40 members of the park’s search and rescue team have scoured the area, spending the night along the famed Appalachian Trail in search of Clements.

‘They’re using all of their senses. They’re listening, they are calling the name of the missing person. We use whistles and things like that, too,’ Julena Campbell, a spokeswoman for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, said.

Authorities are worried that Clements only packed for a day hike so is not prepared for the drop in temperature at night, or multiple days in the wilderness.

‘We know that she was just out hiking for the day, that was the plan, so she was dressed appropriately for day hiking with just a poncho on for covering,’ Campbell said.

Clements, a mother-of-three who works for the Ohio Metropolitan Sewer District, is described as white, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes.

She was wearing a green zip-up sweater, black workout pants and black leggings, a clear rain poncho and white tennis shoes when she went missing.

Anyone who sees her is urged to call the police.

Her family declined to speak to the press.
