A search is underway in the mountains of western Wyoming for a 13-year-old Utah boy who became separated from his Boy Scout group during a backcountry hiking trip.

Sublette County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Travis Bingham said the search for Garrett Hunter, of Draper, had intensified Sunday morning.

Bingham said it’s been more than 24 hours since the teenager, who has Asperger’s, was last seen in the Wind River Range near Elkhart Park.

The sheriff’s department said the location he was last spotted at was located between 1000 Island Lake and Mary’s Lake. 

The scout group had been on a 50-mile, multi-day hike at the time.

The area, about 10 miles from Pinedale, is remote but heavily traveled by hikers.

Members of Hunter’s family and volunteers from Utah have joined in the search, which also includes a helicopter and other aircraft.

Bingham added that Hunter ‘may not approach anyone for help due to his condition.’  

The boy has blonde hair and is 5’9″ and 130 lbs. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt with a blue backpack.
