As Princess Beatrice begins a new chapter by marrying property developer Edo Mapelli Mozzi this year, a figure from her past will also loom large.

Her ex, Dave Clark, has moved back to this country from New York, having married glamorous U.S. businesswoman Lynn Anderson, right.

Lynn has a new job at news website Tortoise Media.

And Dave, who split up with Bea in 2016 after a ten-year relationship, works for a logistics company in the capital.

‘Dave is delighted to be back,’ a pal tells me.

‘He has loads of friends in common with Bea, so will bump into her and Edo a lot.’

But will he get a wedding invitation?

The Duchess of Cambridge’s brother is enjoying a sizzling start to the year.

James Middleton was spotted kissing his fiancee, Alizee Thevenet, during their holiday in St Barts, in the West Indies.

The couple are staying at the five-star Eden Rock resort owned by the in-laws of his sister Pippa.

While Alizee showed off her physique in a red bikini, James’s trim dad, Michael Middleton, made a fashion statement of his own.

The Party Pieces businessman sported a flattering pair of £225 Orlebar Brown swimming shorts featuring an image of Eden Rock — sold exclusively at the hotel.

The Daily Mail Diary disclosed last October that entrepreneur James, 32, who was considered to be one of the most eligible bachelors in Britain, had become engaged to French City worker Alizee, 30.

Russell T. Davies ran Doctor Who and penned TV’s A Very English Scandal, but he refuses to pull rank.

‘I’ve never tried to use my name to get a table at a fancy restaurant,’ the Bafta winner tells me.

‘I don’t go to those types of restaurant — you’re more likely to find me at Pizza Express.

‘If I tried to book a table at [Mayfair’s] The Wolseley it would be mortifying.’

Inverted snobbery, perhaps?

It ain’t over till the fat lady sings could soon become an out-of-date expression.

Soprano Lesley Garrett claims the days of divas performing the roles of slim women have been consigned to the past.

‘It would be incredible now to cast a larger woman in the role of Mimi in the opera La Boheme, because Mimi is meant to be ill and wasting away,’ the Yorkshire-born broadcaster tells me.

‘The days of the big fat opera singer are over. We have to compete with film and television, so casting has to be true to life now.’

Monty Python member Terry Gilliam, who went on to make acclaimed films such as Time Bandits, Brazil and 12 Monkeys, admits there is one unsavoury aspect of his trade that he is happy not to have experienced — so far.

‘All film directors cannot avoid awards or haemorrhoids,’ the director tells me at a party.

‘I’m doing all right in the awards. The other one, luckily, hasn’t affected me yet.’

How TV boss’s shop trip escalated into a peerage

Television impresario Michael Grade found himself going up in the world while on the down escalator in John Lewis.

‘I was buying a replacement iPad and my phone went,’ he reveals.

‘It said, ‘This is the switchboard at Number 10, I have the Prime Minister for you.’

And I said, ‘Hang on, I’m on an escalator. When I get to the bottom I’ll find a quiet corner, just hang on.’ So I get round the corner, I say, ‘OK, I’m clear now.’

And David Cameron said: ‘Michael, I’m compiling a list; would you like to go to the House of Lords?’ I said, ‘Yes, certainly. It’d be a great privilege to serve.’ ‘

He adds: ‘So, I got on the escalator Mr Michael Grade and got off the escalator as Lord Grade of Yarmouth.’

Thank goodness there’s decent phone reception in John Lewis.

Prince Philip is still convalescing after spending four nights in hospital before Christmas, but Sandringham is clearly confident he will make a full return to fitness.

For the private estate in Norfolk, where the Duke of Edinburgh lives at Wood Farm, is using a photograph of him, reins in hand, to promote its horse-driving trials.

They are due to take place in June, just a fortnight after the great man turns 99.

He was seen carriage driving in the grounds of Windsor Castle as recently as last spring.

Women have taken over, says former 007

James Bond producers might desperately want to make the hard-drinking, promiscuous spy more ‘woke’, but they’d be unlikely to succeed if they tried to do the same with George Lazenby, who played 007 in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The Australian, now 80, says it’s no longer a man’s world.

‘You just have to look at the newscasts,’ he says.

‘Seventy-five per cent of the people are women and before it was ten per cent, so women have taken over. I don’t say that as a bad thing, but it’s different. And they’ve got bloody squeaky voices.’

Warming to his theme, he adds: ‘Men haven’t got the balls they had 50 years ago. When I was born my mother had to get permission to speak. And now the men have to. It’s a different time. And, well, the movies have to show that.’
