Second Spain terror suspect is released

A Spanish High Court judge has today ordered the conditional release of a suspect in last week’s terror attacks which claimed 15 lives.

Internet cafe owner Salh El Karib was one of four suspects arrested in the aftermath of the atrocities in Barcelona and Cambrils. He is the second to be released.

El Karib ran an internet cafe in the northeastern Spanish town of Ripoll, where most of the alleged members of the 12-strong cell lived.

Investigating judge Fernando Andreu had originally asked for him to remain in police custody pending further investigation of his possible role in the attacks.

El Karib will have to hand over his passport and check into court every week.

The judge decided that there was not enough evidence to keep El Karib in custody, a court source told AFP.

Another man arrested over the attacks, Mohamed Aalla, was also released on certain conditions earlier this week while two others were remanded on charges of membership of a terrorist group and murder.

Mohammed Houli Chemlal, 21,  Driss Oukabir, 28, El Karib, and Aallaa were all detained last week over their alleged role in the attacks.

Yesterday,  Houli Chemlal told a judge that the group was planning an attack involving explosives at monuments around the city, including the Sagrada Familia church.

But the attack had to be scaled back after an explosion at a suspected bomb factory on Wednesday wounded Chemlal and killed imam and alleged mastermind Abdelbaky Es Satty, the court heard.

Later on Wednesday, police revealed that overnight raids had resulted in the discovery of a suicide vests with live explosives at the bomb factory.

Josep Lluis Trapero, head of police in Catalonia, said 120 gas canisters and traces of TATP components – a homemade explosive that is a hallmark of the Islamic State group that claimed the attacks – had been found at the house.

After a full day court hearing, Chemlal and Oukabir were remanded in custody and charged with terror-related offences.

Aallaa who owns the car used in the Cambrils attack, was granted conditional release, with the judge saying evidence against him was weak.
