See the moment cancer-stricken teen footy fan leaves Eddie McGuire shocked with hilarious answer about his brave fight with the killer disease

  • Youngster attended AFL pre-Grand Final fundraiser on Thursday
  • Displayed his sense of humour in chat with host Eddie McGuire

Cancer-stricken teenage footy fan Riley McGuane stole the show at Thursday’s My Room AFL Grand Final Spectacular fundraising event in Melbourne with a very cheeky quip about his health battle.

McGuane, 14, was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago – and told stunned host Eddie McGuire he is up for the fight because he is a ‘natural smartarse’.

The youngster’s epic response momentarily blindsided McGuire and had the room in stitches on a night when a record $5.246 million was raised for families across Australia fighting childhood cancer.

Riley also happens to be related to AFL great Mick McGuane, who was a premiership winner with Collingwood in 1990.

AFL stars Nick Daicos, Patrick Cripps and Marcus Bontempelli took time out to attend the annual fundraiser staged at Crown – and the trio enjoyed being in a position to give back.

‘It’s bigger than footy,’ said Collingwood midfielder Daicos, who was standing next to McGuane when he thrilled the crowd.

‘Their perseverance and courage is so inspiring … if we can have a slight impact, we will jump in to help out.’

Other guests included Footy Show regulars Nathan Brown, Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd and the always outspoken Kane Cornes.

Viewers were treated to live performances from music stars Cody Simpson and Emmanuel Kelly.

Maurizio Marcocci, Chairman, and Margaret Zita OAM, CEO of My Room Children’s Cancer Charity, were both elated with the generosity shown on the evening.

‘Established more than three decades ago by families touched by childhood cancer, My Room Children’s Cancer Charity has transformed into an essential support system that provides funding for crucial clinical care and supports research aimed at enhancing treatment outcomes,’ they said in a joint statement.

‘To achieve a remarkable total of $5,246,459, thanks to the unwavering commitment of our partners, volunteers and the generous contributions from the public, offering hope to children facing cancer is fantastic.

‘We are dedicated to channelling these resources to the areas that need them most, ensuring every child has access to optimal care and support during their journey.’
