‘Selfies on trains’: Mothers share their biggest bugbears

A exasperated mother has kicked off a lively discussion on the modern trends that parents find most annoying.

The unnamed British woman took to Mumsnet to express her annoyance at what she branded ‘modern trends’, citing toilet selfies and being asked for an email address at the till as her top bugbears.

Many more cited the phenomenon of people taking selfies everywhere, branding it ‘self obsessed’, and others named influencers and celebrities turning into self-proclaimed experts at parenting and cooking as a further irritation.

Kicking off the lively discussion, the mother wrote: ‘Following on from the modern dining trends that annoy you what general modern stuff annoys you?

An exasperated British mother has taken to parenting site Mumsnet to express her annoyance at ‘modern trends’, citing selfies and being asked for an email address at the till as her top bugbears

‘Mine are: People taking selfies in toilets; Being asked for my email address at a till; Wasteful plastic tat in the shops.’

And she was quickly inundated with answers from equally enraged parents sharing their own examples.

Agreeing with the excessive mobile phone use, one wrote: ‘People’s loud phones on public transport. Blaring music and sound effects or having a Facetime call with someone on speaker are all equally annoying.’

One mother even argued that the smartphone phenomenon was interfering with parenting, adding: ‘I’m sad about people who walk along the pavement glued to phone, whilst their baby is in a pushchair having no interaction from them whatsoever.

‘Don’t they realise that children need conversation to stimulate them and develop their speech?’.

Agreeing on selfies being among the top annoyances, another wrote: ‘Particularly selfies in toilets where they don’t put the lid down first’.

And slamming a range of beauty trends, another wrote: ‘The Essex blow dry; Eyelashes on cars; The Joules yellow mac; Every “celeb” that has a baby now being an expert, writing a book and appearing on every TV show’.

‘Duck lips, Rose gold, Over sharing’, another said, while one claimed: ‘Sense of entitlement – especially the blogger ones.’

Many slammed the trend of excessive make-up, with one parent writing: ‘False eyelashes so badly applied that you can see the glue on the lash line. Selfies. Make up that appears to channel the tin man from Wizard of Oz.’

Another agreed, writing: ‘False eyelashes. They look stupid! They never look natural – people with naturally long eyelashes usually have long bottom lashes.

‘I’m sick of seeing women with massive doll like eyelashes on top and then bald looking bottom eyelids!’.

She continued: ‘I was at a wedding last weekend and every second woman looked like a drag queen with their stupid Bambi eyelashes.’

Others were less than impressed with virtual assistants, with one mother writing: ‘Alexa and the like. People can’t even turn their lights on without help.’

Describing modern terms, one mum admitted hating the expression ‘being woke’, adding: ‘Those videos on FB, Twitter etc where heart-wrenching acts of kindness happen where someone just happens to be filming them.’

And another mother took aim at the trend for large lips, concluding: ‘Also trout pout lip fillers. No your lips don’t look full and sensuous – you look like you’ve been smacked in the face with a shovel, love!’,

Another added: 'I’m sad about people who walk along the pavement glued to phone, whilst their baby/toddler is in a pushchair having no interaction from them whatsoever. Don’t they realise that children need conversation to stimulate them and develop their speech?'
