‘Serial fraudster’ stole more than $90k from Gold Coast employer

A mother-of-four who spent years evading arrest following a string of cash theft and fraud will now face nine months behind bars.

Serial fraudster Teleah Maureen Kear has been jailed after stealing more than $90,000 from her employer, a Gold Coast renovation company, over the course of over four years.

The 29-year-old bought a $35,000 car, cosmetics, two tablet computers and a gaming console with her stolen earnings and the matter was reported to police in 2011.

A warrant for Kear’s arrest was put out the following year but the woman avoided penalty until her arrest in 2016, Tweed Daily News reports.

Between October 2010 and September 2011, Kear transferred over $42,000 from her employer Mac McConnell into her own bank account.

Kear pleaded guilty at the Maroochydore District Court to two counts of fraud of more than $30,000, four counts of fraud and one count of attempted fraud. 

She had already faced court in 2009 for a number of offences, including fraud as an employee, and was given 120 hours of community service.

Her charges in 2009 were the result of methamphetamine use, the court heard.

Judge John Robertson described her most recent fraud charges as having some level of ‘sophistication’ and Kear was was ordered to serve a head sentence of four years in prison with a non-parole period of nine months. 

Kear has four children, aged between 13 and one, who will be left motherless during her jail term.
