A mother screamed ‘my son’s in there!’ as a seven-year-old boy died in a ‘suspicious’ house fire which broke out in the middle of the night.

Eyewitnesses revealed how a blood-soaked woman was shouting for help after jumping from the first floor window to escape the blaze.

A murder probe has now been launched after police deemed the fire, which took hold at about 3.30am, to be suspicious.

Crews from four different stations were rushed to the residential road in Deptford, in south-east London, where they were met with a ‘very severe fire’ raging from inside.

Two women jumped from an upstairs window to safety minutes before firefighters arrived at the blaze at about 3.25am.

An eyewitness told The Sun: ‘She was covered in blood saying “my son is in there”. She was shouting and screaming.

‘I got a call from a neighbour at 4.30am – they’d already jumped from the windows by the time the ambulance arrived.

‘They were barely wearing any clothes because they’d been sleeping and it’s so hot at the moment.’

The father of the best friend of the ‘happy’ seven-year-old boy killed in the suspected arson attack said he was ‘absolutely devastated’.

Mcklushia Myles, 36, said the victim, who he said was called Jawal, was ‘like a son’ to him. 

Mr Myles, a carpenter who lives nearby, said: ‘I am absolutely devastated. He was like a son to me. 

‘I saw him everyday. My son is the same age, they were best friends.

‘He’s like family. He was always so happy. I slept through it. I didn’t even know it happened until the neighbours came knocking on the door.

‘It’s unbelievable to know that he’s gone. My head is all over the place. I’m trying to calm down.’

London Fire Brigade say six fire engines and around 35 firefighters were called to the house fire on Adolphus Street, Deptford at 3.25am.

A spokesman added: ‘Firefighters arrived to find a very severe fire inside the house.

‘The ground floor was badly damaged by the blaze, as well as the whole of the first floor and the stairs from the ground to the first floor.

‘Two women jumped from first floor level shortly before the first firefighters arrived at scene. They were both treated at the scene.

‘Sadly, a seven-year-old boy was found deceased by firefighters inside the property. The Brigade was called at 3.25am and the fire was brought under control by 4.48am.

‘Fire crews from Dockhead, Greenwich, New Cross and Lewisham fire stations attended the incident.’

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson added: ‘A seven-year-old boy was found deceased inside the property. His next-of-kin have been informed.

‘Police are working with fire investigators and have deemed the fire as suspicious. A number of surrounding properties were evacuated as a precaution.’
