Shannen Doherty opens up about her battle with breast cancer

Shannen Doherty appeared on Good Morning America Thursday morning where she detailed her battle with breast cancer and how it changed her as a person.

The 47-year-old actress went into remission in April 2017 after a two-year-long battle with the cancer where she had to get a mastectomy to prevent the disease from spreading.

‘Everything is going really well,’ Shannen told Robin Roberts, 57, on Good Morning America after being more than a year in remission. ‘I mean you hear the word remission and it’s a rush of different emotions.’

She continued: ‘There’s a little bit of fear and apprehension.

‘My whole life has been about this battle. What felt like my whole life, which was not my whole life. But it just seems to take over.’

The 90210 star was first diagnosed in August 2015 after doctors found the disease had spread to her lymph nodes, which meant she was either stage two or stage three.

During her journey with battling the disease, Shannen was very open with her followers about what she was going through.

‘I definitely want to share more,’ Shannen said. ‘I know how much sharing helped me because what I got back were these beautiful stories from other people.

‘It’s truly a family. You join up, and everybody embraces you.’

Shannen remained coy about how she plans to share more about her cancer journey since entering remission, but she said it would be an interactive experience as opposed to a book.

Two prominent people who helped Shannen while she battled the cancer was her mom, Rosa, and her husband, Kurt Iswarienko.

‘I had this amazing support team,’ Shannen said. ‘I just need the people that are really honest…and love me for me and not for anything else.’

Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery were all courses of treatment for Shannen in order for doctors to rid her body of the cancer.

But there is still a small chance the breast cancer could come back.

After staying in remission for one year, the actress underwent reconstruction surgery in May to rebuild her breasts.

Despite the strenuous journey, Shannen looks back on the experience in a positive spirit because of how she was able to turn out on the other side.

‘I think it made me a better actor,’ Shannen told Robin. ‘I also think it also made me a better human being.’

Now it is about looking towards future for the actress as she continues to check off the five and 10 year milestones for remission while focusing on her career.
