Shark attack near Delta Island, West Australia

Shark attack off the coast of Australia: Man is rushed to hospital after being bitten with swimmers warned to remain vigilant

Authorities have launched an investigation after a man was bitten by a shark off the West Australian coast.

A St Johns Ambulance spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire a man in his 30s was bitten by the shark at Delta Island, west of Karratha on Wednesday.

She said emergency crews were called about 6.30pm to coordinate his rescue to the mainland.

‘A boat was sent from Varanus Island, he was then taken to Barrow Island and then flown to Karratha Health Campus about 1am,’ the spokeswoman said.

It is unclear whether the man will be transferred to Perth for further treatment.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has confirmed it’s investigating the report and is working with local authorities to confirm further details.

Swimmers in the area are being urged to take extra caution when in the water around Delta Island and adhere to local beach closures.
