A drone video has captured a group of sharks feasting on a whale carcass as it floats off a popular surf beach.

The famous beach at Angourie Point in northern New South Wales was a no-go zone for surfers on Monday as great white sharks devoured the dead whale.

The 12-metre animal was floating offshore when beachgoers witnessed two tiger sharks and a great white feeding on the remains.

The video shows hungry sharks chomping on the dead whale’s tail as it floats lifelessly a few metres north of the famous surf break.

One of the surfers told ABC he and his fellow wave enthusiasts used a boat’s anchor to drag the carcass away from board riders.

They could only move the whale 50 metres as they used a small boat to ‘just drag it past the point’.

Mr Laurie Towner, one of the boaties and a famous surfer, shared the video of the dead whale on social media and cautioned surfers to steer clear.

‘WARNING! Do not surf the point or anywhere around home right now. Just had an epic experience watching a couple decent sized whites chopping into this whale that just missed washing up on the point just now!’ his post read on Instagram.

One of the surfers got very close to the action and touched a passing shark.

What caused the whale’s death is still unknown but there have been similar instances of shark feeding activity reported before.
