A spaniel has survived after swallowing a bag containing six heroin pills during his morning walk at the local park.

Denis Parslow was walking 16-month-old spaniel Shelby, at a park in Brompton, Adelaide, when he noticed something in his mouth.

‘He had something in his mouth which was quite large so I challenged him and he swallowed it,’ Mr Parslow told Daily Mail Australia.

‘We went to the beach that day and he was fine. When we got back home he wouldn’t jump out of the car and wasn’t as active as he normally is.’

Shelby started vomiting and his owners took him to the vet not aware the next few days would cost them $4000.

The vet treated him for gastro with antibiotics and an injection.

However his symptoms got worse and they took him back for a x-ray before the vet decided to operate.

‘They put him on Narcan to take away the effects of the drugs that were in his body,’ Mr Parslow said.

Shelby carried the bag of heroin in his stomach for five days and his owners are glad he made a quick recovery.

‘No one else has encountered anything similar and Shelby is lucky to be alive,’ he said.
