Sheryl Sandberg is standing down as chief operating officer of Facebook owner Meta after 14 years in one of the most powerful jobs in tech.

Sandberg, who is second in command after founder Mark Zuckerberg, said last night she had only planned on holding the post for five years, and it was time for the ‘next chapter’ of her life.

Moving on: Sheryl Sandberg said she had only planned on holding the post for five years, and it was time for the ‘next chapter’ of her life

Her exit comes as Facebook’s parent company has been hit by advertisers reining in spending and increased competition from rivals such as the app TikTok.

Sandberg said she was not sure of what the future holds for her but she will focus on her foundation and philanthropic work.

In a post on her own Facebook page, Sandberg said: ‘I am so immensely proud of everything this team has achieved. The businesses we’ve helped and the business we’ve built.’

Sandberg will leave the role in the autumn but will remain on Meta’s board.

She will be replaced by the company’s chief growth officer Javier Olivan.
