Shirley Ballas under fire from Strictly Come Dancing fans for getting Dianne Buswell’s name wrong

Shirley Ballas came under fire from Strictly Come Dancing viewers on Saturday after she called the show’s professional dancer Dianne Buswell by the wrong name.

Despite the pair working together on the BBC show for the past five years, Shirley, 62, used the wrong moniker while giving her critique of Dianne’s dance with her celebrity partner Tyler West.

While reviewing the pair’s Viennese Waltz to I’ve Been Loving You Too Long by Seal, Shirley called Dianne, ‘Diana’, prompting fans to call the show judge out on social media.

Another viewer posted: ‘How is Shirley still getting Dianne’s name wrong after 5 years? rude #Strictly.’

Someone else wrote to Shirley: ‘FAO: Shirley Ballas. Her name is Dianne, not Diana. Kind regards, The nation. #Strictly.’

And someone else wrote: ‘Shirley could at least get the professional’s name right! That’s twice she’s called her Diana! #strictly.’

Despite her blunder, Shirley was reasonably complimentary of the pair and their dance, with Tyler and Dianne scoring 29 out of a possible 40 for their performance.

‘And I think that you give Diana room to show her fluidity and her flexibility which I rather enjoy as well.

‘But I don’t quite think it was the most comfortable dance for you… there was too many mistakes, you know that, two or three little mistakes were in there, incorrect footwork. Too much incorrect footwork.

Elsewhere, week seven of Strictly Come Dancing got off to a great start on Saturday night as Hamza Yassin and his partner Jowita Przystal pulled of an incredible Cha Cha Cha to I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)’ by the Four Tops.

The wildlife presenter’s dance was so good in fact that the Queen of Latin herself Shirley Ballas branded it the ‘best Cha Cha Cha I’ve ever seen!’

Hamza and Jowita certainly set the bar high for the evening as they bagged an incredible three 10s, with an overall score of 38 points.

She added that she felt ‘overwhelmed and emotional’, saying that their dance was the ‘true language of the cha cha cha’.

Praising Hamza’s beautiful ease of movement and cheeky smile, she concluded that it was the ‘Best cha cha cha I’ve ever seen!’

As per usual, Craig Revel Horwood had a few points to make, noting that Hamza had his feet turned out and there were heel leads in there.

However, he was quick to positively add that ‘the hip action was there’ and that the presenter had ‘beautiful straight legs and fantastic body rolls.’

Motsi Mabuse meanwhile agreed with Shirley that it was ‘one of the best cha cha’s ever’, adding that ‘the music is in your body, on the dancefloor – we enjoyed that!’

Up next was Ellie Taylor and Johannes Radebe and despite topping the leaderboard last week, the pair failed to emulate their previous success.

After their Rumba to ‘Alone’ by Heart, the judged dished out some harsh criticism, with Craig kicking things off by stating that it was ‘a little stiff’ and that she was ‘walking around’.

He added that the performance had ‘no resistance, lacked any hip action and therefore lacked passion.’

Meanwhile, head judge Shirley said the ‘fluidity and flexibility was totally missing’, adding that she wouldn’t do them a ‘disservice’ by padding things out.

Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu were next to take to the floor with a Foxtrot to ‘You Make Me Happy’ by My Sun and Stars, with the judges very impressed with their efforts.

Shirley remarked that the dance was the ‘epitome of style’ before going on to praise their ‘sophistication and overwhelming sense of beauty’.

She went on to speak about Molly’s great technique, adding that she should keep working on those fundamentals.

While Anton commented that it was a ‘hard dance’, before gushing that ‘I really love you dancing like this, super duper – well done!’

The judges were suitably pleased, with Motsi gushing: ‘You raised that level! You came and put your heart on the dancefloor and this is what the show is about… I thought you did great!’

While Shirley observed Ellie’s ‘Paralympian mentality’ is that she never gives up, adding that the swimmer ‘didn’t miss a beat’ during her performance.

Anton meanwhile commented that it was a ‘perfect number – it had everything in it!’
