Shocking footage shows how Australia’s nurses are being treated

  • Footage shows nurses being spat on, choked, and threatened with razor blades
  • Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital endure up to 500 assaults per month
  • Security guards not enough to deter the assaults that are inflicted on nurses
  • Nurses and Midwives’ Union secretary said health workers have a right to be safe

Shocking footage has laid bare the horrific abuse Australian nurses are subjected to by vile patients – despite the presence of security guards with body cameras.

The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital revealed they endure up to 500 assaults per month, releasing footage showing patients spitting on and choking nurses.

However, it is believed that attacks on health workers are actually much worse than what is reported, with 40 per cent of attacks going unreported across Queensland.

CCTV footage, obtained by Nine News, shows hospital staff being violently kicked, punched, slapped and scratched.

Reports reveal that some patients in Mackay have been caught with knives, razor blades and an ice pick.

Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union secretary Beth Mohle told Nine News that this sort of behaviour against health workers is unacceptable.

She also said these attacks affect the workers greatly, with some suffering from PTSD.

‘It makes me extremely angry to see our members continue to be used as punching bags. Any level of violence against nurses, midwives and other health workers is totally unacceptable,’ she said.

‘Any form of abuse be that physical or verbal abuse has a significant effect, and they have a right to be safe at work, and everyone has a role to play to ensure that happens.’
