A Vietnam veteran and disability pensioner who was assaulted by a police officer has said the incident has left him and his wife ‘terrified.’

Barry Woodhouse, who is now 70, went to the Knox Police station in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs with his wife in July 2015 to report a minor traffic accident.

Just before 9pm Barry and his wife Christina walked into the station and expressed their concerns about the other driver’s identity to Constable David Keith Dawson who told them there was nothing he could do.

CCTV footage then shows Barry checking if the door to the side of the counter is open by trying the handle after asking to speak to the officer in charge.

The door is locked so, without trying to force the door, he returns to the counter to wait, Constable Dawson then appears and forcibly throws Mr Woodhouse out of the station.

His head is smashed into a glass door twice and once outside he is thrown onto the ground in what police have said was a ‘dynamic takedown.’

The Age reports that Constable Dawson has this week pleaded guilty to assault in relation to the incident that Judge Gavan Meredith described as ‘a significant abuse of authority.’

The defence said the officer had decided to remove the pensioner to ‘protect the station.’

Outside court, Mr Woodhouse said his wife no longer felt safe around police and had even locked herself inside when an officer once knocked on their front door.

Dawson was convicted of assault and ordered to pay a $6000 fine, he also now works as a sewerage operator after losing his job with the police force.
