Shocking footage has captured the moment when a white man – who had been denied mental health treatment – attacked a Muslim teenager at an emergency room desk in Michigan.

Surveillance video, obtained by WDIV, shows the 19-year-old, who was wearing a dark blue hijab, approach the desk at Beaumont Hospital Dearborn and speak to the woman working there on February 10 around 3.30am.

Moments later, a disheveled man is seen approaching the teenager and pummeling her three times with his fist before hospital staff and security are able to intervene.

The man, identified by police as 57-year-old John Salvatore Deliz, was arrested and charged with assault. 

But a lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court alleges the incident would not have occurred if hospital officials had properly monitored the man.

The victim, who has not been named, had walked into the emergency room after she slipped on ice and feared she had a broken jaw.

Deliz approached her at the receptionist desk and punched her in the head repeatedly, knocking her to the ground before security separated the two.

The victim is now suing Beaumont Dearborn, saying that hospital staff were not paying enough attention to the man.

‘We want to hold them accountable for not looking out for the safety of other patients,’ Majed Moughni, the victim’s attorney, told The Detroit News. 

‘Our No 1 goal is to make sure no human being is attacked the way my client was.’   

Moughini told CBS News that Deliz admitted to hospital staff that he had escaped from a group home and was not taking medications for diagnosed bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  

Deliz was discharged from the hospital that day and allegedly began harassing other patients for cigarettes. 

Security then told him to sit in the lobby to wait for a ride and leave patients alone. Not long after, the teen approached the counter and Deliz attacked her.

‘The hospital was aware of his condition as he was brought because he needed mental treatment. Instead of treating him, they discharged him into the ER waiting room,’ Moughni told CBS News.

‘Instead of giving him mental treatment, they put him back in the patient pool, thereby giving way to his attack.

The victim is currently seeking $25,000 in damages due to her being injured and still being haunted the vicious attack, reported The Detroit News.  

‘She’ll never probably be the same person again,’ Moughini said. ‘She’s emotionally distressed. She’s always looking behind her to make sure she’s not going to get attacked again.’

Deliz remains in custody and will next appear in court on May 30 for a competency hearing.

Beaumont Hospital has released the following statement about the lawsuit: 

‘On Feb 10, a patient in the Beaumont, Dearborn Emergency Center became physically aggressive with another patient in the waiting room. Beaumont security personnel responded immediately and took action to protect the patient and others in the emergency room. 

‘Dearborn Police were contacted and Beaumont staff cooperated fully in the investigation. We take pride in our service to this diverse community and want all patients to feel welcome at Beaumont.’
