Shoppers warning over slightly cheaper apple sauce at Woolworths

‘Vote with your wallets’: Woolworths is slammed for their ‘Own Brand’ apple sauce which uses fruit imported from BELGIUM

  • A Woolworths shopper has pointed out cheaper apple sauce is from Belgium
  • More expensive apple sauce was Australian made and owned – it cost $2
  • Shopper has urged others to ‘vote with their wallets’ and buy Australian items

A Woolworths shopper has urged fellow customers to ‘vote with their wallets’ after highlighting the price difference between imported and Australian-made apple sauce.

The customer shared two images of apple sauce to Facebook – pointing out that the cheaper product, which was a Wooolworths own brand, had come from overseas.

‘The jar on the left is Australian made and owned using 99% Australian products and cost $2. The jar in the right was made in Belgium (0% Australian products) and cost $1.80,’ the post read.

‘Coles and Woolworths are slowly removing Australian brands from the shelves and replacing them with generic (and often not Australian) products.’

The customer urged others to support Australian farmers instead of choosing the slightly cheaper option.

‘The only way we can stop this is to read the labels and buy Australian where we can.’

The post has garnered a lot of support, with thousands of social media users sharing it.

It has also sparked a heated discussion about supermarket giants ‘choosing profit over people’.

‘Shame on you Woolworths SHAME!’ one person wrote.

‘It’s getting harder to find Australian products on the shelves – one day we just won’t have a choice!!’ wrote another.

‘Yes I totally agree. Choose Australian made whenever possible, because soon you might not have a choice. Get out those reading glasses and start scouring the back of labels,’ another person said.

‘Sorry, but Coles and Woolies you can shove it where the sun don’t shine.. Profits before people. Profits before your country… YOU SUCK!!!!’ said another.

A spokesman from Woolworths said they were committed to offering their customers a wide range of products to choose from.

‘Our Own Brand products complement existing ranges and brands in store, providing our customers with a variety of products to choose from at different price points.

‘From time to time, we do source ingredients internationally on our Own Brand products. This is clearly communicated to customers on pack in line with country of origin requirements.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Coles for comment.
