A single mother with an autistic son has pleaded with thieves to return her stolen car – and thanked them for not running her over.

Angie Turpin’s Volkswagen Polo hatchback was stolen from a street north of Brisbane late on Saturday night, not far from her home.

The 44-year-old single mother, whose son has an intellectual disability, was chivalrous, even as he appealed for the thieves to return her car.

‘To the guy (s) who stole my VW Polo …if one of you sees this, thank you for not running me over when you could have,’ she told a closed Facebook group on Sunday morning. ‘Please drive safe and don’t hurt anyone, including yourself.

‘Please I ask you to not damage the car, just leave it when your done (or return it would be even better).’

In a sad twist, a thief even taunted Ms Turpin for forgetting to lock her car and leaving a spare set of keys in the centre console area.

‘I understand that you have your reasons for why you’ve stolen it,’ she said, again making a direct appeal to the thieves.

‘And you were quite correct when you yelled out that I should’ve locked it (it was the one time I forgot to).’

Ms Turpin’s Volkswagen was stolen from Second Avenue at Scarborough, in the Moreton Bay region north of Brisbane, shortly before midnight.

The owner, who moved to the area last year, told the Redcliffe Peninsula Facebook group how she never had to lock her car in Melbourne.

‘The irony is I lived in Melbourne majority of my 44 years and have even left the keys in the ignition and never had it stolen,’ she said.

‘Haven’t been here even a year and…well…you know the rest.’

Despite living in Queensland, Ms Turpin’s car still has Victorian number plates.

Should the car be returned, Ms Turpin said she would even offer the thieves a cup of tea.

‘I wouldn’t punch them, might offer them a tea and a chat,’ she said.

She asked the thieves to show some compassion this Christmas.

‘It is never too late to have compassion or stop what you are doing,’ Ms Turpin said.

‘I ask this as a single mother, who cares for her autistic son with an intellectual disability.

‘It would certainly be a wonderful Christmas gift.’

‘I’ll get fitter by riding everywhere,’ she said.
