Rod Stewart’s Graham Norton performance was panned by viewers who called it ‘cringeworthy’ and ’embarassing’ online following his Friday night appearance. 

Performing his new single, One More Time’ the star 76, was branded ‘dated at best’ and compared to Bill Nighy’s aging rocker character Billy Mack from Love Actually by social media users.

Sir Rod was on the sofa with Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Josh Gad and Nadiya Hussain during the episode before taking to the stage.

The chart-topping singer donned a sparkly black blazer, skinny dark trousers and a crisp white shirt.  

Norton introduced Stewart’s performance at the end of the show saying: ‘Right, time for music, this band have been topping the charts for over 50 years.

‘Here performing his single One More Time, it is Sir Rod Stewart.’ 

But viewers were left completely underwhelmed by Rod’s performance and took to social media to express their dissatisfaction.

Another wrote: ‘This Rod Stewart performance on Graham Norton is the worst thing I have seen in quite some time.’

Someone else wrote: ‘It’s really nice that they let their granny sing a song with them. #GrahamNortonShow #RodStewart.’

Other social media users wrote: ‘It was bad already, and then that key change really cemented it!’ and ‘Totally agree. What the hell was that? And his ‘group’ – the audience for that gig really dubious in the hair and leg requirement #RodStewart #parody.’ 

Many viewers also shared clips of Bill Nighy’s character Billy Mack in Love Actually, where he plays a dated singer hoping to regain his former stardom.

Rod’s single release is part of his 31st studio album, The Tears of Hercules which he revealed was out yesterday.

He announced the new album in a bizarre post on social media, in which he glides along on a scooter.

It is an album he says was born out of lockdown because he had ‘so much time to think’.

The new album release comes after he said he will be doing a huge arena tour in 2022 and tickets have gone on sale.

During the appearnace, the singer was asked by Norton how he keeps in shape but could not hear the host.

Rod said he plays football and has had the same trainer for 35 years after he was told by Norton that he looks ‘fit as a flea.’  

He also joked that his wife was going to ‘kill him’ because he made a comment about sex and how it was always on his mind.

The Graham Norton Show airs Friday nights on BBC One.
