Slavisa Jokanovic is SACKED by Sheffield United after just six months in charge with Blades languishing in 16th in the Championship

  • Sheffield United’s Slavisa Jokanovic is set to be sacked by the Blades
  • The Serb, 53, became the Yorkshire club’s first overseas manager last summer
  • However, six wins in 19 games has seen the manager’s job hang by the balance

Slavisa Jokanovic has been sacked by Sheffield United with the Championship side languishing in 16th place this season.

Former Watford and Fulham boss Jokanovic was named Chris Wilder’s replacement last summer and tasked with rebuilding the Blades after a torrid campaign that saw them relegated from the top flight.

The 53-year-old signed a three-year deal, becoming the club’s first overseas manager. His impressive tenures with the Hornets and Cottagers left fans optimistic that he could get the Blades straight back up.

However, a lacklustre start to the campaign has seen the Yorkshire club take decisive action. Sportsmail understands that relations between the Blades and Jokanovic have been fractious for weeks, and he will leave following talks with the club.

United’s 1-0 win over strugglers Reading on Tuesday night was their first league victory in five games, and they currently sit eight points adrift of the play-off spots.

The Blades made several high-profile loan signings in the summer, with Wolves star Morgan Gibbs-White joining for the season, as well as Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane.

Liverpool defender Ben Davies also joined for the season, as did former Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen, from Roma.

United have been without several key players due to injury this season. Jack O’Connell, Oli McBurnie and Sander Berge have all been sidelined for lengthy spells.

Jokanovic’s injury woes were made worse at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night after John Fleck collapsed on the pitch unchallenged.

The Scotland international was stretchered off after lengthy treatment on the pitch and spent the night in the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

He has now been allowed home and the club said in a statement that: ‘medical staff will continue to monitor him closely.’
