Smart car hangs out of the back of a white van as it is towed along the road

That’s NOT Smart! Tiny car hangs out of the back of a white van as it is towed along road – held in place by a piece of rope tied around the door handles

  • A Smart car is seen jutting out of the back of a Mercedes van in Upminster, Essex
  • Joanne O’Driscoll, who was in the car behind, said the driver didn’t seem fazed
  • Smart cars weigh around 750kg while Mercedes vans can carry around 1,500kg

This is the bizarre moment a white van drives along the dual carriageway with a Smart car jutting out of its back doors.

And a thin rope fastened to the Mercedes van’s door handles and looped around the tiny car appears to be the only cable preventing it from shooting out on to the road.

But despite the seemingly perilous set-up, Joanne O’Driscoll, who passed the van on the A127 in Upminster, Essex, said that the driver was utterly unfazed.

From the passenger seat in her car, Joanne filmed the van which was directly in front of her, giving her a clear view of the black and pink smart car protruding out of the back doors.

A large portion of the Smart car is seen sticking out from the Mercedes van and its front wheels spin on the tarmac.

Joanne said: ‘The driver didn’t seem fazed by his actions and was going on about his day.’

Smart car models generally weigh around 750kg while Mercedes vans of this type tend to have a payload capacity of 1,500kg.

But although the van is able to bear the load of the Smart car, it is unclear whether or not it is breaking towing laws, especially because the vehicle obstructs the van’s rear number plate.
