A hunt is underway for a jewellery thief after a diamond was swapped with a fake gem in a Melbourne store. 

Police have released images of a bald man with glasses as they investigate the theft at the Collins Street shop in the city on March 16 at around 12.30pm. 

Investigators say the man made an appointment to look at the gem before making the swap and walking away.

Police have released images of a bald man with glasses as they investigate the theft at the Collins Street shop in the city on March 16 at around 12.30pm 

The man is described as aged in his 30s, with a medium build and a bald head.

CCTV footage shows him wearing glasses, a black jumper, blue jeans, black runners and a black backpack. 

There have been no arrests or charges in relation to the incident at this stage.
