Social media sensation from Victoria loses battle with cancer

A 16-year-old social media sensation has died after losing her three-year battle with cancer.

Sophia Gall’s family shared the devastating news to her 83,300 Instagram followers on Thursday.

‘Hi guys, it’s with heavy hearts we let you all know Sophia passed away this morning surrounded by her loving family. We are devastated Sophia has passed but she is now free from Cancer,’ the post read. 

‘After a mighty battle against cancer, Sophia has earned her Angel Wings. Sophia’s bravery and strength and wit was present til the very end. She is now free to fly and watch over us all.

‘We thank you sincerely, for all your love and support, during this journey. We know this was a great comfort and joy for Sophia.’

Sophia Gall, from Victoria’s Geelong, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a rare form of bone cancer – after a tumour was discovered in 2015. 

Since her diagnoses, Sophia had been sharing her journey with the world in videos posted on Facebook and YouTube, hoping to lift the spirits of other childhood cancer patients.

Countless rounds of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery had taken over Sophia’s life over the past few years.

Despite all that, Sophia remained a bright and cheerful teenager with a mission.

‘We need to find a cure, I know there’s not one type of cure for cancers but this just can’t keep happening to people!’ Sophia said in the video.

‘I’m scared as hell of what’s gonna happen to me.’

Sophia also had a moving message for her followers.

‘You don’t know what’s going to happen so smile, be brave, be positive, be strong and believe in yourself.’

Through the countless months of battling the cancer in 2016, the disease had cleared from her lungs. 

However, in May 2017 when it was revealed that her cancer had returned and spread to her leg.  

She shared shared a tearful video on YouTube,  where she broke down as she told her followers that she would cease treatment.

‘I don’t know how much longer it is going to be, I don’t know how much longer I am going to be here for,’ she said.

‘I just want to enjoy every moment I have on this earth because life is too short and life is unfair.’

Not one to dwell on the her situation, Sophia decided to make the most of her last living moment and by travelling to the US, Europe, and Asia, and meeting her role models. 

‘At the moment I’m just going to go on a big holiday around the world and enjoy my life as much as I can,’ she said.

‘We need to find a cure for cancer because this is just going to keep happening.

‘I can’t explain enough how hurtful and painful this is not just for me but for my whole family.’

She shared her journey with her followers, and was seen as a beacon of hope for her followers and cancer patients who were all supportive of each other. 

She met make-up artist Patrick Starrr, and famous musician Ed Sheeran.
