Soft-goth glam is trending thanks to Wednesday Addams

Netflix recently announced that ‘Wednesday,’ starring Jenna Ortega, is returning for a second season. 

Since premiering on November 23, the show has become the streaming service’s most-watched debut for an English-language series.

Whether or not you’re a fan, there is no denying that Jenna’s depiction of the moody teen has inspired a new trend in fashion and beauty – soft-goth glam.

The color black is a major component of Wednesday’s distinct sartorial flair and has been since the world was first introduced to her over 80 years ago.

Effortless, chic and efficient, head-to-toe black is the city of New York’s unofficial uniform.

But it’s Wednesday’s glamourous twist on the shade that has fashionistas everywhere excited. 

In the month after the show’s release, there was a 1,000% increase in searches using the keyword ‘lace’ by shoppers on Stylight – the world’s leading online search platform – compared to the month prior.

A 26% increase in search interest on platform boots like the ones worn by the character, and a 5% increase in searches for ‘black’ items after the release of the successful series.

To promote the hit series, Jenna looked stunning channeling her beloved character. Her most eye-catching look came on December 16, for her appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Jenna further cemented the relevance of goth-core while promoting the hit series in multiple designer ensembles that paid homage to her beloved character.

The 27-year-old was spotted in Los Angeles in a silk-satin Rodarte dress featuring a lace bodice and puffy sleeves in the same vein as Wednesday’s prom look.

And fans can’t help but be inspired. 

According to Look Fantastic’s Beauty Trend Report, Curtain Bangs saw 90,500 average monthly searches in 2022. 

The series has even had an influence on car enthusiasts.

Costume designer Colleen Atwood told Bazaar that she used black fabrics that were semi-reflective, and incorporated white pieces when possible to give the character’s costumes dimension.

While Wednesday’s Alaïa prom dress stole the show in season 1, her school uniform featuring Tim Burton’s favorite pattern – stripes – is a masterpiece.

For an elevated spin on dark academia, layer a black and white jumper (stripe or polka dot) with a blouse featuring a sharp Peter Pan collar, and pair it with a ladylike silk skirt.
