A soldier in army fatigues has carried out a dramatic citizen’s arrest after he was allegedly cut off by a man who was driving erratically.

The member of the armed forces, a 51-year-old from Point Cook in Melbourne’s west, restrained a man with bright red hair by sitting on him until police arrived.

A photograph shot by a shocked bystander shows the man in military uniform straddling another man with a distinctive hairdo.

Another image taken after police made an arrest shows the man with red-dyed hair sitting in handcuffs while an officer speaks to the soldier.

Police said they were called to the Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre car park in response to reports of an assault at 10.30am on Thursday, Nine News reported.

A verbal dispute escalated into a physical assault, police claim, triggered when the man with distinctive hair cut off the 51-year-old driver.

The red-haired man allegedly assaulted the member of the armed forces who then sat on him while waiting for police.

Three police cars arrived a short time afterwards, arrested the alleged offender and put him in handcuffs.

The alleged offender was also treated by paramedics at the scene and witnesses said he had blood coming from a suspected injury to his head.

Police said they interviewed a 51-year-old from Altona Meadows who restrained the alleged offender, but released him pending further enquiries.

Victoria Police are urging witnesses to come forward.
