Sole survivor of Detroit plane crash filmed rolling out of burning wreckage

Harrowing footage has captured the moment the teenage sole survivor of a Detroit plane crash that left two people dead managed to roll from the burning wreckage and stumble to safety.

The single-engine plane, which was carrying three people, was en route from Arkansas to Coleman A. Young International Airport on Sunday night when it apparently struck a power line and tree.

It crashed in a vacant lot just feet away from homes before bursting into flames.

Police said a 54-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman perished in the fiery crash, but a 17-year-old male miraculously survived.

Chilling footage shows the moment a 17-year-old boy (above wearing a red shirt) tried to squeeze through a window of a burning plane after it crashed in Detroit on Sunday night

Footage shot by witnesses showed the young man desperately trying to free himself from the wreckage.

At first he could be seen struggling to squeeze through one of the windows as the plane door became engulfed in flames.

After several seconds, he was forced to go through the flames and commando roll out of the plane.

The survivor, who WXYZ reported to be the pilot, stumbled to safety with burns clearly visible on his arms.

Detroit police Captain Mark Thornton said the survivor remained in a critical condition in hospital.

He credited ‘courageous citizens’ for helping to rescue the man.

Cordell Owens told WDIV that he could hear the people screaming for help when the plane burst into flames.

He used an ax to break open the plane door and bust the windows.

Owens said he didn’t have his knife so wasn’t able to cut the man and woman free from their safety belts and the windows were too small to pull them through.

He said the boy was begging for help and he could see his arms and face starting to burn before he was able to roll out of the plane through the opening in the door.

Fire crews arrived on the scene when the plane was already engulfed in flames.

Authorities have not released the names of those on board the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot had reported issues with the plane’s landing gear and that it was running low on fuel just moments before the crash.

Both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
