Somerville House security guard stabbed at Brisbane school

An intruder is on the run after repeatedly stabbing a security guard at an elite Brisbane boarding school.

The guard, aged in his 50s, was attacked after disturbing the intruder at Somerville House in South Brisbane about 5.30am on Wednesday.

He has knife wounds to his lower and upper abdomen and his sides, as well as his arms, but police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Despite being stabbed up to five times, the guard fought off the intruder and ran to the administration block where he called for help.

He was taken to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra hospital in a stable condition, the ambulance service said.

Detectives are scouring the school grounds and searching surrounding areas for the attacker, who initially fled on foot but may have boarded a train during his getaway.

The attacker was likely still armed in his getaway and would be covered in blood from the attack.

Students living at the boarding house were on campus at the time the guard was stabbed at the school’s performing arts centre.

Somerville said classes would run as normal on Wednesday but students would be kept away from the crime scene.

‘The area where the incident occurred has been cordoned off from students. The students are not in any danger,’ it said.

‘Support services will be available should students feel affected by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the security guard and his family at this time.

But despite assurances from the school and police, some parents say they’ll stay with their children until police catch the offender.

‘I won’t be dropping her off until I have a little bit more information. I’d just like to know if they’ve found the person who attacked the security guard,’ one mother told 9 News.

Somerville House was established in 1899 and is a day and boarding school for girls from Prep to Year 12. It’s also a co-educational school for pre-prep girls and boys.
