Southampton boss Mark Hughes hits back at hotel farce ahead of relegation decider: ‘The Swansea Marriott is one of the poorest hotels we’ve stayed in’

Mark Hughes has hit back at the suspected dirty tricks to unnerve his Southampton side before their relegation battle with Swansea on Tuesday evening.

The Saints’ were originally booked into the Swansea Marriott hotel for Sunday night but were suddenly told that their booking no longer existed due to a ‘virus’ but the hotel were still accepting bookings from the public. 

The Southampton squad eventually ended staying at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel near Cardiff but Hughes insisted that the whole ordeal has in fact worked in their favour as he slammed the whole ordeal and the Marriott.

‘Actually, they’ve done us a favour,’ Hughes told Sky Sports in a pre-match interview. 

‘The Swansea Marriott is one of the poorest hotels we’ve stayed in.’

While Sportsmail understands that reports of a cancelled police escort were not true, Southampton were made to walk the final part of their journey to the Liberty Stadium after being told they would have to wait 25 minutes on the team coach.

It is reported that the Southampton boss told the bus driver to stop the coach before leading his players to the ground on foot. 

Both Southampton and Swansea are locked together on 33 points at the bottom of the Premier League table and the winner of Tuesday’s game will go a long way to securing survival.

Speaking at the Vale ahead of the game on Tuesday afternoon, a senior Southampton source said: ‘We’ll just use this as extra motivation. If we keep doing the right things, we’ll be OK.’
