Heavy snowstorms in Minnesota have caused dozens of crashes in a matter of minutes.

The spring storm dumped half a foot of snow on Minnesota and the Dakotas, while the icy temperatures made for treacherous driving conditions.

State patrol reported 197 crashes within the space of nine hours in Minnesota, with 13 people injured yesterday. No one was killed.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported more than 25 crashes on state and interstate highways in the metro area just between 8pm and 8.15pm Monday. 

The snow storm struck the Midwest dumping heavy snow from the Dakotas into Iowa and Minnesota on Monday night, continuing into Tuesday morning. 

And the snow was expected to continue through Tuesday evening, reaching anywhere from 6 to 10 inches across southern Minnesota.

Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi are bracing for more strong winds, tornadoes, and hail today, ABC News reports.

Snow will also continue to fall in the north, from Iowa and Wisconsin, to Michigan which could receive up to a foot of snow. 

The storm will hit the East Coast by Wednesday afternoon, stretching as far south as Florida and as north as Maine, bringing powerful winds and hail.
