A Brussels sprout was spared from the dinner plate on Christmas day – because of its uncanny resemblance to Mary and Jesus.

Sheila Freeman, 63, from Keighley, West Yorkshire, was preparing the festive lunch when she noticed the astonishing religious resemblance.

The computer technician immediately took the sprout off the chopping block and put it in the fridge for safekeeping.

‘I was peeling the veg for Christmas dinner when I noticed an unusually-shaped sprout,’ Sheila said.

‘When I took a closer look I noticed it looked just like Mary and the baby Jesus.

‘I just started laughing and took a few photos so I could show people.

'Everyone who has seen it has said the same thing, that it looks just like Mary and Jesus,' said Shelia Freeman

Sheila enjoyed Christmas Day with her sister Anita, who lives in Argentina.

They bought the sprouts from a local greengrocer on the 24th.

‘We usually go out for curry on Christmas day, but I had left it too late to book this year so we had to do some last-minute shopping for traditional Christmas dinner,’ Sheila said.
