Squirrel who lost his front paws given prosthetic set of wheels

A squirrel has got a spring back in his step after becoming the first of his kind to be given replacement limbs. 

Karamel lost his front paws after they got stuck on a wild animal trap in Batman, Turkey.

But now medics at Istanbul’s Aydin University Vocational School of Health Services have given Karamel a new lease of life with the new set of wheels.

The new pair of prosthetic arms are the first of its kind to be given to a squirrel, thanks to the innovation of an animal loving computer engineer.

The project was led by Tayfun Demir and orthopedists Mustafa Gültekin, Dr. Tolgay Şatana and physical therapist Eylem Küçük, according to the Daily Sabah.

Demir has a pet squirrel of his own and revealed the animals are targets for amateur hunters, despite the practice being illegal.

Karamel had to undergo a six-hour long surgery before undergoing a second operation. He has now recovered and is able to feed himself.
