A teenage boy is in a critical condition after a freak accident during after-school athletics practise.

The 13-year-old was struck in the head during hammer throw practise at St Albans Reserve in Clearview in Adelaide’s north at about 5pm Thursday.

Emergency crews treated the boy for a serious head injury before he was rushed to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where’s he’s now fighting for life.

It’s understood that the boy was from Christian Brothers College.

Police spent several hours at the scene on Thursday night, where they were seen speaking to another student from the school.

Several staff Christian Brothers College were present at the time but wouldn’t comment on the incident, The Advertiser reported.

Enfield Harriers Athletic Club is based at the reserve, which has a hammer throwing circle.

It’s understood the club has a list of safety policies in place for the hammer throwing circle.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the school for comment.
