According to many QPR fans, Stan Bowles holds the title of Rangers’ greatest player.

He showcased his brilliance in the no.10 shirt for seven memorable years during the 1970s, endearing himself to supporters both on and off the pitch. 

Retro Football Blog recounts a well-known tale in which Bowles wore two different boots to a match. 

In 1974, Stan Bowles and every bookie in the White City area of London found themselves gleefully counting their blessings after the player executed a clever plan to pocket some extra cash while on England duty.

During the annual home internationals in May, Bowles’ wallet swelled due to his strategic choice of football boots.

Under contract with Gola, he received an additional £200 for each appearance for his country, with a sales rep conveniently delivering the payment in cash to the team hotel.

In his autobiography, Bowles wrote: ‘As an incentive, you used to get an extra fifty quid if a picture of you in a Gola t-shirt appeared in the paper, so I was always keen for a bit of that’

A visitor from Adidas offered the QPR star £250, to which Bowles thought Christmas had come early. 

The football legend continued: ‘For £450, I’ll wear one boot on each foot.

‘Nobody knew what I had done until a few days later, but it obviously didn’t go down too well when they found out.’
