A children’s playground has been closed off after deadly asbestos was found just metres nearby.

Some asbestos was found on the road and council is unsure how it got there, Herald Sun reported.

There was no warning sign either and diggers were seen working near the site and claimed they were unaware of the risk.

Asbestos fibres are around 50 to 200 times thinner than a human hair, can be invisible and be breathed in easily, according to the Cancer Council.

Being exposed to asbestos increases the risk of developing cancers of the lung, ovary and larynx.

They can become trapped deep in your lungs and cause damage over a long time.

It increases the risk of developing cancers of the lung, ovary and larynx as well as mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lung).

City Hall director of city services Guy Wilson-Browne said the council was aware of the problem and were working to have it cleared.

‘Four bags of asbestos were removed from an area near the Barwon Valley Fun Park earlier this year,’ he told the publication.

‘The city is in discussions with other authorities to ensure this is safely removed.

‘The source of the identified asbestos is unknown.’
