A motorist raced along Interstate 70 in Colorado at 140mph – and accelerated when cops signaled for them to stop.

The driver, at the wheel of a dark, vintage Mustang, was spotted by state troopers at 12.30am speeding 10 miles west of Glenwood Springs on Saturday morning.

Police chased the unknown person down roads where the speed limit reduces to account for perilous bends and sharp corners as it follows the Colorado River, reports the Denver Post.

Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Gary Cooper said when police turned on their lights and sirens, the person driving the car accelerated to 150mph.

The vehicle was travelling so fast police were unable to get a read on its license plate.

‘They tried to catch up. They weren’t doing it,’ Cooper said. ‘They couldn’t get close enough.’

The person behind the wheel was driving at more than twice the speed limit and state troopers decided to call of the chase in order to reduce risk to life.
