Stephanie Hill and Joel Pavy marry after Cyclone Marcus hit Darwin

Rain, hail or cyclone couldn’t stop a young couple from getting married.

High school sweethearts Stephanie Hill and Joel Pavy tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Saturday just hours after Cyclone Marcus hit the top of Australia – the worst natural disaster since Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

The happy bride and groom braved the wild weather as they posed against the backdrop of an uproot tree after wind gusts reaching 130km/h left behind a path of destruction across Darwin over the weekend.

The newlyweds initially set their dream wedding for August – but decided to move the date forward after discovering their unborn baby boy was going to be due the same month.

And the Northern Territory duo have proved their love can overcome any challenge after they exchanged their vows in front of family and friends shortly after the tropical cyclone passed.

‘We really wanted a Territory-themed wedding, but we didn’t realise a cyclone would come,’ Stephanie told NT News.

The pair were forced to relocate their venue and decided against postponing the event as they had family and friends travelling a long way for the special occasion.

‘Everyone else seemed to be really stressed by everything, but we stayed positive,’ she said.

The couple are expecting their first baby together – a baby son who will be born in August.

‘And no, he’s not going to be called Marcus. We’ve been asked a few times,’ Stephanie added.

Photographer George Fragopoulos said the wild weather almost left him stranded in his home – but astonishingly, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology gave the all clear by lunchtime.

‘It was touch and go there for a while,’ he said.

‘A large tree came down in my driveway at 10am [on Saturday) and I had no way of leaving to photograph their wedding, it was also too dangerous to drive on the roads.

‘Then at around 12:30pm we got news the centre of the cyclone had past Darwin so I was able to clear my driveway and make my way past fallen trees and powerlines to photograph Steph and the girls getting ready.

‘They had their rings engraved with yesterday’s date and many family had traveled to Darwin for their wedding. As “luck” would have it, Cyclone Marcus hit Darwin earlier than expected and they were able to tie the knot.’
