Stephen Lawrence murder suspect Jamie Acourt ‘gets move to luxury prison wing with access to games room and 50in HD TV after being punched by fellow inmate’

  • Wandsworth Prison insiders say he has been moved into a segregated section

Stephen Lawrence suspect Jamie Acourt has been moved into a comfortable prison wing with special facilities after he was punched by an inmate, a source claims.

Acourt, 42, was reportedly attacked by a black prisoner last week just days into a nine year sentence for his role in a £3 million drugs plot.

Acourt was arrested over the 1993 racist stabbing of Stephen, 18, but was never charged or taken to trial – despite an inquest ruling the teen was ‘unlawfully killed’.

Acourt’s attacker was named by a source as fellow HMP Wandsworth inmate Tyrone Archer, 39, from Croydon in south London, according to The Sun.

Due to the attack last week, prison insiders say Acourt has been moved away from the normal cells and into a cushy segregated section at HMP Wandsworth.

The insider claims he has access to a kitchen, can cook his own meals, has private access to a games room with a 50 inch HD TV, and gets more time out of his cell.

The source said: ‘Acourt was attacked by a fellow inmate last week so he was moved by prison staff. He was in one of the main wings before. Now he’s living a top luxury lifestyle.

‘It’s shocking. Acourt is let out of his cell at 8am and can live like a normal human being until 9pm at night. Others are barely even allowed for one hour a day.

‘He has access to a kitchen with a stove, fryer, and toaster so can make his own meals. He even has access to a private games room with a 50 inch HD TV.’

Five suspects – including Jamie Acourt – were arrested after the 1993 attack of Lawrence.

Two men, Neil Acourt and Luke Knight, were charged, but the CPS dropped the charges.

Stephen’s family launched a private prosecution in 1994 against Gary Dobson, Luke Knight and Neil Acourt, but they were acquitted in 1996.

An inquest a year later recorded a verdict of unlawful killing ‘in a completely unprovoked racist attack by five youths’.

Regarding the move, a Prison Service spokesperson said he couldn't comment on individual prisoners. He added: 'A prisoner at HMP Wandsworth (pictured in a file photo) has been put on report after punching a fellow prisoner on 12 December'

In 2012, Dobson and Norris were found guilty of Stephen’s murder after new evidence came to light.

Jamie and his brother Neil, 43, were ringleaders of a gang that couriered tonnes of cannabis between London and the North-East.

Jamie fled to Spain in February 2016 after police started investigating and he was extradited in June this year and denied conspiracy to supply Class B drugs.

But he changed his plea on the second day of his trial at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, December 7.

He was allegedly attacked by another inmate last Wednesday while being readied for exercise with other inmates.

His attacker is said to have hit the back of his head as he walked on to the prison landing. He did not need medical assistance.
