A driver involved in a horror crash that left two teenagers dead allegedly tried to flee the scene after colliding with an oncoming vehicle. 

An allegedly stolen Holden Commodore lost control just after 4pm on Sunday while fleeing police in Cranbourne, Melbourne’s south-east. 

An 18-year-old Cranbourne woman and 16-year-old Frankston boy were killed.  

Another one of the car’s five passengers, a 17-year-old Frankston North girl, is fighting for life, while another 18-year-old man escaped with minor injuries.

The 20-year-old driver of the car is under police custody in hospital after being arrested at the scene on the South Gippsland Highway.

A 39-year-old woman from Lynbrook, travelling with her family in a Holden Captiva, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The two girls aged six and nine escaped with minor injuries.

Charges are yet to be laid by police. 

Witness Dean Mercieca told the Herald Sun that the vehicle lost control while being chased by police, before the driver allegedly tried to flee.  

‘One of my mates captured him down there and the cops arrested him,’ Dean Mercieca said.

A witness said she attempted to calm the shocked mother who was frantically asking about her two daughters that were seated in the back.

‘She was extremely worried about her two kids and her hands were shaking,’ she told the Herald Sun.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the crash.

Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said ‘the exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage’.  

This accident brings the annual road death toll to 181, 61 deaths higher than this time last year.
