Stormzy reveals he ‘cried’ after being ‘overwhelmed’ by the pressure of fame as he returns to the music industry after two year break

Stormzy revealed he felt ‘overwhelmed’ by the pressure of fame as he returns to the music industry after a two year break.

Speaking to Louis Theroux on his new interview series, the rapper, 29, he explained he ‘cried’ because he felt ‘super depressed’ while trying to become the best artist.

It was at the start of 2020 that the platinum-selling star took a break from public life as he quit social media and stopped doing interviews.

In an interview to be screened next week on BBC2, he told Louis: ‘I just had this feeling of being overwhelmed, of thinking I can’t handle this. I’d often just crash out and get super depressed or super withdrawn and reclusive and just disappear. I’d just stay at home and smoke a lot of weed.

‘That’s a lot. I might have cried about that. There was a period afterwards when I was not in the best mind space and it was a bit overbearing.

‘I was trying to figure out how to be the greatest artist. I was in a relationship, I am also a family man, a son, a provider, trying to lead in my community, and I was making an album.

‘I felt overwhelmed, which was new to me. I would break down, it was super heavy.’

It comes after Stormzy reflected on his painful split from his ex-girlfriend Maya Jama as he opened up about their relationship on Friday.

The rapper admitted to making mistakes during their four year relationship but revealed he has since grown.

The couple, who split in 2019, have remained friends, despite Stormzy previously confessing to ‘disrespecting’ and being ‘inconsiderate’ towards her.

In exclusive quotes obtained by The Sun, the musician spoke candidly to Louis, 52, and admitted that he had learned some tough lessons following their split.

Stormzy went on to hint at mistake that he made during his four year relationship with Maya, adding that he never wished to feel that way again.

The notoriously private couple dated for four years but in 2019 were said to have ended their relationship in order to focus on their careers.

A representative for Maya confirmed the breakup to MailOnline at the time, with the Radio 1 DJ said to have already moved out of the rapper’s home.

Maya’s representative told MailOnline: ‘I can confirm the relationship has ended and Maya has separated from Stormzy.’

It’s not the first time that Stormzy has spoke of his relationship with Maya, having  declared that he still loves her ‘wholeheartedly’ and wants to marry and have children with his ex-girlfriend in the future.

In 2020, he admitted he has ‘never loved anyone how I’ve loved her’ in a new YouTube interview with Charlamagne tha God.

‘She’s a f***ing G, bro,’ the grime star said of his ex. ‘I love her wholeheartedly. I’ve never loved anyone how I’ve loved her.’

The radio host asked if he thought the pair could ever reconcile, to which he responded: ‘I would love for that to happen but I don’t know…

‘I would love to be the man who she needs, I would love to do all the things that make this work. I want to marry her, I want to have her children.’
