Stranger Things heartthrob Dacre Montgomery announces exciting new project

Dacre Montgomery, best known for his breakout role as Billy Hargrove in Netflix’s Stranger Things, is gearing up to make his directorial debut with a film titled The Engagement Party.

Set to be filmed in NSW next year, the 29-year-old is venturing behind the camera, marking a significant step in his career.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Thursday, Montgomery revealed he hasn’t yet decided if he’ll also appear on screen in the project.

‘I’m not looking for this to be an engine for my acting career at all,’ he said.

‘I want to direct, and I’m serious about directing, so I’m taking it seriously and not trying to use it as something else.’

Montgomery, who also starred in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, made the announcement while promoting his new campaign for Politix called Leading Man.

Fresh off his appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival, where his film Went Up The Hill premiered, the actor is now shifting focus to the upcoming project.

The Engagement Party is shaping up to be an intimate and intense drama.

‘It is a four-hander, a chamber piece like a play that takes place in one location with only four people over one night,’ Montgomery explained, hinting at a tightly-focused narrative driven by character dynamics.

Acclaimed Australian filmmaker Nash Edgerton has signed on as a producer for the film, adding further weight to Montgomery’s directorial debut.

It comes after Montgomery shut down rumours that he is replacing his friend and mentor Hugh Jackman in any upcoming Marvel films.

He had been tipped as a possible replacement for Hugh, but he since said this isn’t on the cards for him.

Montgomery had supposedly been up against the likes of Taron Egerton, Paul Mescal, Milo Gibson and Daniel Radcliffe for the iconic role.

He said his friendship with Hugh, who offered him guidance early in his Hollywood career, was more important to him than landing a big franchise role.
