Stranger Things season two promises new monsters

He may have barely escaped the Upside Down alive.

But it looks like Will Byer’s troubles with the mysterious dimension are not exactly over, according to the stars of Stranger Things.

The cast appear on three new covers of Entertainment Weekly, where they spoke about what’s in store for the highly anticipated second season of the hit Netflix series.

They’re back! Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard and their co-stars appeared on three different covers of Entertainment Weekly’s October 6 edition

In season two, the stars have a new foe to reckon with.

Nicknamed the ‘shadow monster’, the creature is something Will (played by Noah Schnapp) sees in visions of the Upside Down.

‘It’s all connected to this singular threat, which is tied into this shape that Will sees in the sky,’ explained co-creator Ross Duffer.

Matt Duffer also said season two will address the disappearance of Barb, who was found dead in the Upside Down in season one.

He also said they had fallen ‘in love’ with Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson.

‘The good news is that a lot of what we wanted to see or what we responded to, that seems to be what the audience responded to,’ he said of orchestrating season two.

‘Like we fell in love with Gaten, and there were aspects, like Barb, we were already planning to deal with.’

There’s also Bob Newby, a new love interest played by Goonies star Sean Astin for Winona Ryder’s character Joyce Byers.

But even Bob is in the dark about what really happened to Joyce and her family.

‘Bob doesn’t know anything that happened,’ Sean told the website. ‘So he just loves Joyce and…uh-oh!’

The upcoming installment takes place a year after the first, leading to some major character developments.

‘They start out a year later, and they’re totally sort of new people as a result of this experience that happened last year,’ said David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper.

The creators also said they have approached season two as a sequel to season one.

‘When we started describing it as a sequel, Netflix was like, “Don’t do that, because sequels are known to be bad”‘, said Matt. ‘I was like, “Yes, but what about T2 and Aliens and Toy Story 2 and Godfather II?”‘

The first season of the show followed a group of friends who go searching for their missing buddy with the help of a telekinetic stranger. All while combating a mysterious monster, a strange dimension, and a covert government operation.

Season two focuses on the missing friend who has been found and has brought some excessive baggage back with him.

It’s been a year since season one debuted, but the stars insist their day-to-day life has remained unchanged.

‘It’s definitely been affected by the show a big bunch, but it’s not different,’ Millie told the New Yorker. ‘I’m still the same person.’

Season two of Stranger Things will premiere on Netflix on October 27.
