A scene from Season 2 is shown, where Eleven uses her powers to close the portal, and she’s heard saying that these new arrivals don’t ‘make sense’ because she ‘closed the gate.’

Will Byers suggests that it’s possible the demonic figure heard in the opening ‘never left’ and now that the portal is closed, it’s ‘trapped’ here on Earth.

Will suggests that this demonic figure might want to attach himself to someone again, and just as he says that, there is a shot of Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery).

While not confirmed, it’s possible that Billy could be the new villain for Season 3, who becomes the Demogorgon’s host.
