The strawberry contamination saga has become an international crisis after needles are found in New Zealand fruits. 

Supermarket chain Countdown, is warning customers to cut up strawberries before consuming them after needles were found in the fruit bought in an Auckland supermarket, NZ Herald reported. 

The Choice brand strawberries, which were sourced from Western Australia, have been taken off the shelf at Countdown, Supervalue and FreshChoice supermarkets.

Countdown is giving customers the choice to return their strawberries in exchange for a refund. 

‘As an extra precaution and following similar advice from public health authorities in Australia, customers should cut up any Australian strawberries before eating them,’ the supermarket said.

‘Countdown is in contact with both New Zealand and Australian authorities as they investigate this matter.’
