Strawberry moon looms large as hot weather means it is clearly visible in UK night sky

  • The Strawberry Moon is a name given to the pink-coloured full moon which occurs every year in June
  • According to stargazers this year’s Strawberry Moon will be visible during the early hours on Thursday
  • The name is thought to derive from Native American tribes during the height of strawberry picking season

Thursday morning will see both Saturn and the remarkable ‘Strawberry Moon’ visible over the skies of the UK.

The stargazing phenomenon is the name given to a full moon which turns pink during sunrise and occurs in June each year.

According to experts, this year’s Strawberry Moon will be visible during the early hours on Thursday, but enthusiasts hoping to catch a glimpse will need to be up early.

The name is thought to derive from Native American tribes as it falls in late June during the height of strawberry picking season.

Saturn is expected to appear in the night sky at around midnight on Wednesday and will be at its highest point at 1am on Thursday.

As with Saturn, the hot weather means that the moon will be clear in the night sky. Those hoping to see it should head to an open space for a better view.
